The College of Design and Innovation, along with the Shanghai International College of Design and Innovation at Tongji University, is proud to present “Fly Me to the Moon 2.0” at the 23rd Dutch Design Week (DDW), taking place from October 19 to 27, 2024, in Eindhoven, Netherlands. As the sole Asian university officially invited by the DDW committee, Tongji’s exhibition distinguishes itself within the core section of this esteemed event, recognized as one of Europe’s three major design festivals.
Curated by Professor Sun Jie, “Fly Me to the Moon 2.0” aligns with this year’s DDW theme, “REAL UNREAL,” providing an immersive experience that bridges the realms of imagination and reality. Tongji University’s exhibition features 45 innovative works created by 163 designers and artists, emphasizing “intelligent and sustainable design for future industries and lifestyles.”
The exhibition is organized into five sections—Friends, For a Better Life, Dreaming & Reality, Science & Fiction, and Becoming New—each examining how design can address global challenges. Furthermore, an online exhibition space has been established to enable audiences worldwide to engage with the works virtually.
On the opening day, co-curator Associate Professor Wang Qi offered profound insights, expertly guiding international audiences through the exhibit's distinctive design elements and concepts. A standout feature of the exhibition is the golden “space capsule” installation, which allows visitors to experience a surreal sensation of weightlessness and detachment from reality. This sensory journey encourages contemplation on the convergence of design, technology, and future possibilities.
This exhibition represents another significant milestone for Tongji University College of Design and Innovation, as well as the Shanghai International College of Design and Innovation, on the global stage. This follows their participation in the 64th Salone del Mobile Milano in April and the upcoming 2024 Paris Design Week China Creative Pavilion in September.
