Sino-German Moving Image Exhibition and Forum B3+Shanghai, 2016

Moving image is an old yet new media. From today’s viewpoint, moving image can be dated back to the projected short films in Europe about 100 years ago, or earlier to the Phenakistoscope as toy in the form of a spiral disk with images on it, or even to the pinhole imaging in chaos ages and Plato’s shadows in the caves. Along the footsteps of its technological development, moving image has experienced a wave in terms of its making methods, forms of display, and ways of admiration. Its making methods have been developed from hand-drawings to shooting films and digital representations; its forms of display have changed from peek by individuals to collective carnival; and its ways of admiration have changed from passive watching to active participation. It is never a mere record of the real world but another scope of reality for the mankind. Nowadays, under the tide of virtual reality, the Reality in Imagination can go beyond the limitation, pushing moving image to the circumstance similar to that of 100 years ago, with its unpredictable glory and fantastic illusion.

From 26th September to 15th October, 2016, the B3 Biennale of the Moving Image will collaborate with Shanghai Design Week and Tongji University to present M-space, an exhibition with academic seminar of moving image from the Sino-German pioneers. The activity offers a platform for the discussion of the current situation and future development of moving image, as a part of the communication and dialogue on the subject between China and Germany.

With the support from the Hessische government, the B3 Biennale of the Moving Image is co-organized by the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach (HfG) and the Hessen Film and Media Academy (HFMA). It covers different aspects of contemporary moving image: video, performance, installation, experimental film, animation, game, academic research and business applications. It has become pushing force for the development of moving image with the cooperation of art, science and technology, enterprise, design and education on the international level. It is also a platform for the creation and communication of new ideas, and a representative forum across regions and disciplines for the exploration of new directions. Over 200 thousand of visitors, both from Germany and international, have participated in the B3 Biennale since 2013. The 3rd B3 Biennale will be held from 29th November to 3rd December, 2017, with its central theme of “ON DESIRE”, reflecting on the political, technological and aesthetic aspects of the newest trends around the moving image in art and media.

The College of Design and Innovation in Tongji University(D&I, originally as the Industrial Design Department)is a pioneer in the education for designers in the digital context. Many of its graduates since the 1990s are still active in the related fields of digital media, including new media artists, educators in colleges, motion graphic designers, interaction designers, founders of game companies, and kick-starters of Internet business. The collaboration with the B3 Biennale will be beneficial and positive for the development of the re-founded Media and Communication Direction in D&I.

The M-space exhibition is a collection of the awarded and outstanding art works from the past B3 Biennales, and the works from the the new media artist who live and work in Shanghai and near regions. The collection includes experimental video, short film, movie, installation, game and virtual reality, which almost covers every type related to contemporary moving image. The works from local artists demonstrate a timeline of the development of moving image in local context, from the early experimental films to the current students’ works. The roundtable seminar invites the representatives from art, design, technology, academy, museum and gallery and related institutions to join in the discussion of the “new space for moving image” under today’s technological context. In the Hessen Movie Night, which is a part of this activity, the movie Labyrinth of Lies directed by Giulio Ricciarelli will be played. The Minister of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in Germany will also attend the opening ceremony and the movie night.
