EPC 2016 encourages all contributions that take designing in complexity as a starting point of the long-term and profound systemic transformation. Grounded in cases—emerging, ongoing, or in plan—EPC this year aims to bridge the gap between design research and real world changes.

Workshop Day comes into being to help reach the goal. It services as a platform to bring business world and academic world together. How design impact real-world systems will be experienced and discussed in the form of well-designed workshops, lectures, seminars and conversations.

Workshop Introduction

There are many limits for design in the contextof business. As designers, we have to probe into the balance between the user’s experience and business operation to find the core for design. In this way,designers can design a healthy model for business development and hence bring new mindset and ideas to business, which ultimately empowers new business develop mentand upgrading.

 

During this workshop, we will give you areal-life experience of design in offline retail business context. You wil llearn how to evaluate the feasibility of a design plan, to grasp the comprehensive design concept and design key points, etc.

Institute for the Study of Coherence and Emergence (ISCE), USA


Michael Lissack is the director of the Institute for the Study of Coherence and Emergence (ISCE) as well as the founding editor emeritus of ISCE’s journal, Emergence now entitled E:CO. His academic work focuses on the social systems aspects of complexity science. He was Smith Barney’s senior banker with over all responsibility for new product development, municipal derivatives, and the technical work produced by the firm’s Public Finance Division. He is the author of a half dozen books, director of a research institute, and a frequent lecturer on business ethics.

Patrick Whitney

Professor, Dean

Patrick Whitney is the dean of the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, and is the Steelcase/Robert C. Pew Professor of Design. He has published and lectured through out the world about ways of making technological innovations more human, the link between design and business strategy, and methods of designing interactive communications and products. His writing is generally about new frameworks of design that respond to three transformations: linking insights about user experience to business strategy, the shift from mass-production to flexible production, and the shift from national markets to markets that are both global and "markets of one."  Business Week has profiled him as a “design visionary" for bringing together design and business, Forbes named him as one of six members of the “E-Gang” for his work in human-centered design, Fast Company has identified him as a "master of design" for linking the creation of user value and economic value, and Global Entrepreneur named him one of the 25 people worldwide doing the most to bring new ideas to business in China.

Yrjo Sotamaa

Professor, Chairman of the Board at Radical Design Week Association RDWA, Chairman of the Board at Sotamaa Design


Professor Sotamaa currently serves on the Boards of the Danish Centre of Design of Design Research, the Arts-based Research Program PEEK of the Austrian Science Foundation, the College of Design & Innovation at Tongji University, the Finnish-Swedish Academy of Industrial Design, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation and the Helsinki World Design Capital 2012. He is member of the Scientific Committee of the Japan-Finland Program, the Court of the Royal College of Art, the Editorial Boards of Asia Design Journal (Korea) and All Design Magazine (PRC) and the Steering Group of the China Culture Export Program.

Professor Sotamaa has contributed nationally and internationally to turning design thinking into one of the major innovation drivers of the future. He has been one of the key architects of the Finnish National Design Strategy and played a pivotal role in shaping the User-driven Innovation Strategy of the European Union. He is currently member of the Design 2020 vision group of Danish Government.

SONG Xiaofeng

CEO/021 Incubator Co-founder


SONG Xiaofeng is the CEO and Co-founder of 021 Incubator at Shanghai from 2015, who focus on the research about the Social Innovation javascript:void(0);Entrepreneurship. He was the co-founder at China Creative Center from the Director of Product Design at 2015, who was the first Chinese designer at SONY. The T series digital camera that he designed was the Sales Champion at Asia camera market for half a year when he worked for Tokyo’s headquarters from 2005 to 2007 .His SONY audio series products were also the Sales Champion at the SONY audio product line at United States and the European market from 2008 to 2012. This Sales Champion was one of the biggest profit contribution to his department. He took the four outstanding project awards. And he was the General Planner of the SONY student design workshop from 2008 to 2012.

She is also the Brand Strategist of SVC Venture Club, the largest US-China investment platform. This platform connects experienced investors, entrepreneurs, experts and distinguished talents. She worked as a researcher about the Urban Planning Management. Also she was the Art Director of TEDxSuzhou. She has authored some articles about the Design + Internet at the Tech Media, SV Insight.

Dr. Huang, Kai has been working for Medtronic as Sr. new product planning manager and once served IMS consulting as consultant and Philips research Asia as Sr. scientist. He has gained multi-domain experience from technology to business in healthcare industry, with a focus of interest of applying stat-of-the-art innovation methodology to discover insights, and define, develop new solutions to serve hundreds of millions of patients, ultimately driving company business growth. Dr. Huang gained his Ph.D. at Fudan University with a major of biomedical engineering. He has published over 20 academic papers and holds 4 global IP applications.

Yubei Gong is an ethnographer, design and innovation strategist. Prior to her PhD study at Design and Innovation College of Tongji University, she was the head of China Office at Idea Couture and innovation consultant at ReD Associates. She has over 6 years’ experience in helping companies reconnect with their customers by discovering and acting on meaningful human insights. Gong has been leading the research team working with a range of global clients.
