GUO Cheng

Brief Introduction

Guo Cheng is an artist currently living and working in Shanghai. Working primarily through installation, he integrates custom software and hardware, mixed media, and spatial interventions to explore the materiality and ideological dimensions of technological systems. He examines how infrastructures—from data centers to geological strata—regulate human experience across different temporal scales. In recent years, he has approached the co-constitutive relationship between technological infrastructure and ecological systems from a planetary perspective. With a restrained yet subtly absurd tone, his works juxtapose vast spatiotemporal scales with ordinary technological artifacts, revealing the material and relational networks that sustain contemporary life yet often remain overlooked. His works have been presented at M+ Museum, Tai Kwun Contemporary, Fudan Art Museum, Wuhan Art Museum, ICA at NYU Shanghai, Macao Museum of Art, Chengdu Art Museum, BY ART MATTERS, UCCA Edge, and Deutsches Hygiene-Museum, among others. His commissioned works include Digital Terraforming, Becoming Ripples, The Larva of Time, The Weather Consensus, and The Net Wanderer. He has received honors including the Best Exhibition Award at Gallery Weekend Beijing, New Century Art Foundation Art Production and Exhibition Support Program, Porsche Young Chinese Artist of the Year Award, Ars Electronica Honorary Mention, STARTS Prize nomination, Digital Earth Fellowship, Special Jury Prize of Huayu Youth Award, and BADaward.
