Jarmo SUOMINEN

Jarmo Suominen has background from Architecture and Design and is working in both of these fields. His research of service logic in architecture and design will enable service driven urban development in novel and sustainable way. Current research is focusing to the new ways of learning, working, and living based on service logic and innovation. He has received numerous grants and over 5 million euros worth of funding for research projects he has led.  He had strong understanding both of academic requirements and practicalities of business life.He has led various multidisciplinary projects between industry, academia and public organizations. Jarmo Suominen has won numerous architectural competitions and has got prizes from 20 architectural and design competitions.

 

Since 1999 Jarmo Suominen has been working in Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT as a visiting scientist in MIT Media Lab and from 2002 as professor in University of Art and design, now part of Aalto and Department of Architecture in Aalto. Since 2012 he has been working with Tongji university, and from 2015 got High end foreign expert status from China Foreign experts Bureau and is now professor at Tongji Design & Innovation. He has a practice focused on service innovations in architecture since 2001. He is a board member of Radical Design Week and is now leading a Sino Finnish Challenge program for 2017 year China.

 

Jarmo Suominen is the owner of Suominen Architects Ltd, an architectural practice since 1991.He has won numerous prizes in architectural competitions in Finland and in Europe and heldseveral art exhibitions in Europe.As a director of EcoDigiCity Ltd Jarmo Suominen has been developing sustainable andtechnically highly advanced city concepts and design manuals for especially Chinese markets.Jarmo Suominen is also a Senior Advisor in Ogilvy One Finland and Taivas Group, part of theWPP one of the world's leading communications services groups. SOCIAL IMPACT

Jarmo Suominen has organized international research workshop in Boston, Shanghai, Montreal, Rio De Janeiro and Espoo/Helsinki.  He has been the chair of international conference for Customization and Personalization (2008-09 MCPC2009 Conference General Chair). Jarmo Suominen was in charge for developing Head of the Aalto Metrics and Criteria's Transformation team. He has also been involving of organizing Smart Customization MIT seminars in MIT and numerous workshops in Aalto, Tongji and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP

Jarmo Suominen has been running Future Home Institute as director from 2004 to 2012. He has taken care of more than 20 research project as principal researcher. He has been developing multidisciplinary research projects between MIT and Aalto/Taik and inside Aalto/Taik involving cross industry partners from service operators to construction companies, real estate brokers and technology companies. Since 1999 Jarmo Suominen has been working in Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT as a visiting scientist in MIT Media Lab and a visiting scholar in the Department of Architecture.Jarmo Suominen has been supervising numerous thesis projects in Aalto/Taik and mentoring 3 thesis projects in MIT. He has been organizing seminars for industry collaboration and for project development in all Aalto Schools. He developed consortia model for thematic research projects with MIT for 24 living and work Life industry consortia's and planned EUE Shok program structure.

SOCIAL IMPACT AND INTERACTION WITH STAKEHOLDERS

Jarmo Suominen has been running numerous activities with university partners as an expert and advisor. He has been in charge of workshops for urban development with cities like Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Oulu, Jyväskylä, Joensuu and Mikkeli. He has also been organizing Urban Design Workshops in Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Montreal and Boston.  He has been expert advisor for Nokia for urban development and location services as well as for mass customization strategies. He has been involving with multi-stakeholder processes for development of Suurpelto and T3 areas in Espoo.

MEDIA COVERAGE

Jarmo Suominen has been visible in numerous articles around various medias of design, urban development and research. He was running Urban design workshop in Rio de Janeiro which reaches 23 magazines and newspapers with covering articles. Numerous interviews to local TV stations.

Shanghai Radical Design Week was also widely published and Urban Design workshop was covered in numerous articles. Jarmo Suominen's work has been published in all relevant architectural and design magazines in Finland and in numerous other magazines internationally.

ACADEMIC COLLABORATION

Jarmo Suominen has been working parallel in Taik/Aalto and MIT from 1999. He jas organized numerous events, projects, seminars and collaborative processes between Aalto and MIT. Since 2011 he has also been working with Tongji and is now in the process of applying visiting professorship there. He has also been working with University of Helsinki since 2011 regarding to Science Communication Platform and development of HU Learning Center and co creation Platform, Think Center. He has also been working with University of Technology in Tampere since 1990.

NEW PROCESSES AND PRACTICES

Jarmo Suominen has been developing Demo processes for building and real-estate industry. Learning by doing practices have been novelty in building sector and Suominen has introduce methodologies and practices to test new solution concepts before actually building them. He has also been adapting Story Board practices for movie industry and concept development methodologies from industrial design to be transferred to built environment. He has studied impacts of shared economy and service dominant logic for architecture and developed shaerability index for analyzing accessible resources. He has also developed industrial customer journey tools for mapping multichannel customer journeys.

Jarmo Suominen has working with numerous industrial partners and collaborators. He has been advising and teaching in various level of educational organizations in construction sector (like Kiinko, kiinteistöalan koulutuskeskus and Rakli, Rakennuttaja Liitto). He was the co founder of european network of living labs with Veli-Pekka Niitamo from Nokia. He has worked with numerous agencies in relation to urban design, interior design, building services and interfaces and is currently an advisor fro N2 marketing agency for developing Urban Concepts. He was also co founder of Digi Eco city, urban developer for China Urbanization and city development. He is principal in Suominen Consulting Oy having various clients around urban development. He is also advisor in HubConcepts Ltd, developing innovation hubs globally and partner in NGIN Workplace in Boston, developing co working facilities and services there.
