2014 Tongji Design Week

The 2014 Tongji Design Week has concluded successfully. This event was organized by the College of Design and Innovation at Tongji University, Shanghai Design Week 2014, Shanghai Industrial Design Association, and China Industrial Design Institute(Shanghai).  The theme of this year was 'New Space', covering industrial design, graphic design, interaction design, innovation education, biomimicry research, sustainable development, and etc.

[10.10]Day One: Sustainable Design Forum
At 1:00 p.m. on October 10th, the first forum “Sustainable Design Forum” of Tongji Design Week was held in the Lecture Hall in Building 3 of the College of Design and Innovation (D&I), whose theme was “Sustainable Innovative @Design 3.0”.
REN Zhangwei, Associate Architect of Shenzhen Institute of Building Research Co., Ltd., gave a speech titled Sustainable Green Building Design Strategy in the Context of New Urbanization. Davide Fassi, Associate Professor of College of D&I Tongji University, shared his researches and practices in relevant fields of Urban Farming.
The forum focused on innovative design with core concept of low-carbon and sustainable development, exchanged explorations and achievements pertinent to sustainability and social innovation at home and abroad, and aimed at inspiring more thinking, discussion and practice in sustainable innovation in the background of Design 3.0.

[10.11] Day Two: Interactive and User eXperience Design Forum (IXDF) of Tongji Design Week 2014 and Sino-Italian Tongji Day Go on Wheels
On October 11th, Interaction and User eXperience Design Forum (IXDF) was held in the Lecture Hall in Building 3 of D&I.  Sun Xiaohua, Associate Dean of D&I, delivered an opening speech. Then, Donald Norman, Honorary Professor of Tongji University, Patrick Whitney, Dean of School of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Ken Friedman, Chief Professor in design and innovation research at D&I, made a discussion under a lively and relaxing atmosphere on design education, design thinking, interactive design and user experience design in the form of free talks and Q&A.
In the afternoon, Dr. MA Xiaojuan from Huawei Noah's Ark Lab gave a speech of “From broken to breaking: Recycle, Reuse and Repurpose Design” in the IDXF forum. Additionally, Dr. LIU Wei, talked of how to step toward interactive design from industrial design. In the evening, Prof. Pieter Jan Stappers communicated with participants about “four types of design-user-centered design, a-fourth type, product design & experience design”.

Meanwhile, Sino-Italian Design Day went well in the Lecture Hall of Building 2, Teaching and learning research achievements in double Master Degree program (i.e., “Product Service System Design” and “System Design”) and Design MBA program by Tongji University, Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino over the past seven years.

[10.12] Day Three: Biennial International Advisory Board Meeting and Opening Ceremony of Tongji Design Week Exhibitions
On October 12th, Biennial International Advisory Board Meeting was successfully held in the Lecture Hall in Building 2. Board members gathered here to discuss the strategic development of design discipline in Tongji.,
After the meeting, they were invited to attend the opening ceremony of Tongji Design Week exhibitions. Exhibitions were briefed by the respective curators in D&I and summarized by Pius Leuba. He expressed his appreciation for the great efforts of Dean LOU Yongqi in preparing for this event and leading the college of D&I to the top design school and presented Dean LOU a T-shirt with best wishes which was signed by all the staff and student volunteers of the Design Week.
JIANG Bo, Vice President of Tongji University, opened champagne and declared the kick-off of Design Week exhibitions!

[10/13]  Day Four: The 3rd Emerging Practices Design Research and Education Conference
On October 13th, 2014, the 3rd“Emerging Practices: Design Research and Education Conference 2014” was successfully held in the College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University.
Focused on "Developing", present scholars including Don Norman, Patrick Whitney and Ken Friedman shared their ideas and experience with researchers, practioners, teachers and students from different fields.
The Conference consisted of two major parts. In the morning, Don Norman, Patrick Whitney, Ken Friedman, Kun-Pyo Lee and Dori Tunstall gave speeches on design science, research, core competitiveness and design anthropology. In the afternoon, a parallel sub-conference was held, where 12 chairmen and more than 50 abstract submitters were divided into 5 groups to discuss on 5 sub-themes respectively. The academic discussion results of the Conference were displayed in the form of a small exhibition in the Lecture Hall .
Prof.LV Peiming, Vice president of Tongji University attended the conference and conferred on Prof. Don Norman “Honorary Professor” of Tongji University and on Prof. Ken Friedman “Guest Professor” of Tongji University.
The launching ceremony of the journalShe Jiwas also held on the same day. The journal will be co-published by Tongji University and Elsevier. Vice President of Tongji University JIANG Bo, Chief Editor Ken Friedman, Executive Editor LOU Yongqi and Managing Editor MA Jin jointly announced the unveiling.

[10.14] Day Five: D2 Workshop Session III: Interactive Design with Sound
On October 14th, D2 Workshop Session III: Interactive Design with Sound was held in Center for Digital Design Innovation (CDI), Tongji University,co-hosted by CDI,School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Queen Mary University of London and Music Engineering Department of Shanghai Conservatory Of Music. Students from different universities and majors attempted to create interactive audios together under teachers' guidance.
Prof. Nick Bryan-Kinns from Queen Mary University of London guided a brief brainstorm and a group discussion to initiate the sparkles in students' heads. In the end, they happily took a group photo with the eagerness for the next workshop.

[10/14]Day Five:  Biomimicry: The Future of Sustainable Innovation Forum
On October 14th, the forum themed “Biominicry: the Future of Sustainable Innovation” prepared by Biomimetic Design Lab of College of Design and Innovation (D&I), Tongji University (BiDL) was held in the Lecture Hall in Building 2. Later, experts and researchers in biomimicry from all over the world had a discussion on how to apply biomimicry in China in the main forum and session separately.
In the afternoon, experts and students deeply explored the application of biomimicry in the session and both benefited a lot.

[10.15] Day Six: Reflection Seminar on Design Education Philosophy of Prof. ZHU Zhongyan
On the afternoon of October 15th, Reflection Seminar on Design Education Philosophyof Prof. ZHU Zhongyan was held. Prof. WU Zhigang, Vice President of Tongji University, Prof. LOU Yongqi, Dean of D&I, Prof. FAN Shengxi, Chairman of the College Council, Prof. LIU Guanzhong, the father of China’s Industrial Design education and many top design educators attended the conference. Prof. WU Zhigang delivered the opening speech, expressing his appreciation for Prof. ZHU's great efforts in education for years, and gifted a piece of calligraphy (“Wei Pin Liu Xiang ”, meaning his devotion to teaching is impressive) to Prof.ZHU. Afterwards, Prof.ZHU shared his experience and achievements in his education career and expressed his confidence in boosting the design education in China.

[10.15] Day Six: Symposium"media, space and architecture/a BAUHAUS perspective"
On October 15th, Symposium"media, space and architecture /a BAUHAUS perspective" was held in Innovation Factory 206 in D&I.
Prof. WU Jie of D&I introduced the history of D&I, briefed researches done by digital media design and “micro-innovation” studies. The Forum also invited IIMDS alumni to deliver speeches. Prof. LOU Yongqi, Dean of D&I, attended the sumposium and expressed his wish to strengthen the cooperation with Bauhaus for common growth.

[10.16] Day Seven: "Fabricating the Future – Open Design and Manufacture in China" International Symposium
On October 16th, Fablab-Shanghai, the first Fablab in China, held its one-year anniversary celebration in Shanghai with focus on “Fabricating the Future – Open Design and Manufacture in China” International Symposium. Dozens of makers, pioneers and researchers at home and abroad were invited.
Meanwhile, Fablab-Shanghai also scheduled the innovation market, where many indigenous makers gathered and Maker+ and Morgan Team joined in.

[10.17] Day Eight: IBM-Tongji Design Thinking Seminar and Workshop Go on Wheels
On October 17th, IBM-Tongji Design Thinking Seminar and Workshop were successfully held in Sino-Finnish Center, Tongji University. LIU Zhenyuan from College of D&I made an opening introduction and briefed “Emerging Practices” Design Education Forum to the audience. Kevin Grignon, the director of IBM Design Studio Shanghai, and 10 or more colleagues from Design Department of IBM Shanghai joined in the workshop and shared their design thinking,explorations and practices.
In the afternoon, participants were organized to experience a "design thinking"- themed workshop, namely, "Financial Management Mode of the After 1990s", which won the unanimous praise from IBM.

[10.25] Day Nine: Reflection Seminar on Design Education Philosophy of Prof. YIN Zhengsheng

On the afternoon of October 25th, Reflection Seminar on Design Education Philosophy of Prof.YIN Zhengsheng was held. Prof. LOU Yongqi, Dean of D&I made the opening speech, in which he appreciated YIN's great contribution to the design education in Tongji and gifted a piece of calligraphy to YIN . Prof. YIN delivered a speech on design management, modern design history, public design, and etc, winning the bursts of applause. Prof. HE Renke, Prof. CAI Jun, Prof. TONG Huiming and other guests also elaborated their academic views .
