Study at D&I

Undergraduate Studies

There are four undergraduate programs in D&I, namely Industrial Design, Environmental Design, Media and Communication Design, and Product Design. Students who accomplish the whole study track and meet all degree requirements can be conferred upon Bachelor’s Degree of Arts or Bachelor’s Degree of Engineering.

All students must take the basic courses in the first year. These basic courses are designed to introduce basic concepts of design and train students with basic ability in design such as invention (of new ideas), creation, and expression. More specifically, the course Introduction to Design informs students of the history of design, and different types of design in term of profession, approach and value. Design Conception and Presentation triggers students’ intuition, improve their ability to create symbols and objects, and enrich methods of presentation and the development of preliminary sketches and models.

Open-Source Hardware and Programming enables students to embrace new technology and learn how to use new technological tools to create relatively simple prototypes. After the completion of the above-mentioned and other design foundational courses, we introduce basic knowledge and know-how of product design, industrial design, communication design, environmental design, and digital media design to students with a series of subjective courses. All students are required to be familiar with the modeling and processing equipments in D&I’s Innovation Field.

In the second year, students begin to take specialized courses in a specific program. Students can gradually grasp systematic knowledge and methods in design, improve their ability in logic and innovation, and form basic design values.

In the third year, education will broaden students’ mind and strengthen the correlation between design and social and economic problems through industrial and international collaboration. In the last year, we help students to further build their coordination and organizational skills, to improve innovation abilities, and teach them to be better team players through relatively complicatedly projects and graduation design projects. Projects in real-world contexts enable students to improve their cooperative and independent ability in design, preparing them for future careers and studies.

Industrial Design Program

For undergraduate students, teaching in Industrial Design program will focus on product design, and introduce some concepts of non-physical dimension such as service design and system design. At the first stage, courses in this program inform students of the three core elements of product design, that is, form, function and the relation between them. Students are required to have a grasp of basic methods and patterns of product design. After that, we use modern design methodologies to help students get familiar with the whole process of design, development, distribution, and recycling. With deep and broad training in design, students are expected to develop effective concepts of design, with the awareness and ability to coordinate products, human beings, and environments.

Environmental Design Program

By offering training in space design, this program helps students to develop their innovation ability in design on basis of understanding of spaces, logic, and basic techniques of design. With a series of increasing complicated studios of interior and outdoor design, students are expected to, while taking into consideration of function, space, market conditions, environmental factors, the physical and psychological needs of users, and user experience in human-environment integration, to create a high-quality ecosystem of living by means of technology and arts.

Media and Communication Design Program

Product Design Program

At the undergraduate level, education of this program mainly focuses on designing tangible and material products. Meanwhile, it also involves designing brands, services, strategies and systems related to product development. The program offer a wide range of teaching and training, including material experience, configuration (form, shape, appearance, etc.) design, human-machine interaction, product structure inquiry, and diversified product design studios.

The program is aimed to develop students’ design and creative thinking, and help them to grasp different processes and methods of product design. Through deepening design education and broadening its coverage, this program enables students to reflect upon the relationship among products, human beings, commerce circles, and the society, and help them to form proper design concepts. Students are expected to acquire strong sense of responsibility and capabilities to deal with the complex inter-relation of products, human beings and environments.
