Let’s get frugal

The project focuson young Swiss/students: Through a field research in Swiss students’ apartmentsand exchanging about our own cultures – Indian, Chinese and Swiss – andexperience with frugal thinking, we got to the insight, that Swiss people donot intentionally act frugal or see the value of frugal design. Therefore wesee our project as a mission to raise awareness for frugal thinking.

The final outcomeof this two weeks project is a short stop-motion movie explaining the idea offrugal design in a fun and cool way. By showing the emotional side of an aswaste considered product and giving a simple explanation of the ‘frugal’concept, the clip arouses the viewers interest in the topic. The movie is meantto be part of an educational campaign and to be spread on social media.

Frugal Guerrilla

Frugality is the natural impulse present in all people to use as little ofany given resources as possible. We invent a way to reduce the total volume of plasticbags produced and givepeople a fantastic sense of participation.

Toni-Go

For international students it is difficult toget familiar with the campus and the environment in the initial stage. Toni-Gois an exciting game for students to explore the 10 coolest spots in ZHdK andbecome a part of the family.

Instead of using many words, the game usessimple graphics to overcome the language barrier. Playing the game enables onememorize the space quickly and prevents confusion. Our frugal approach is tosimplify the language and get the foreign students integrated in a short time.

TAKE interACTION

Through a social experiment our group tried to force interaction throug hirritation. Which in turn led us to realize that interaction can not be forcedbut has to be encouraged by building up communities.

Following ourresearch, the Swiss and other western sense of community seem to gradually break apart. Leaving individuals looking out for only themselves.Through an overflow of acoustical and visual inputs people tend to ignore or miss crucial information in public places.Interaction cannot be forced. It has to be encouraged by building communities, in which people look after each other.

Hoii

In swiss, growingnumber of refugees is a problem and there seemed to be a conflict in thesociety. After visiting the provisional housing centre,we realized that just by giving thema place to live, we are not solving the problem. we have to look beyond just financial support and go deeper in the lives of these people who have just left everything behind to just seek freedom and peace.

Hoii is a systemdesigned for non-profit organization AOZ(Asyl Organization Zurich).Itencourages social integration of the immigrants with the locals. After filling the application form on the website, both of them will be matched by AOZ to be buddy that can help each other in life problems and communication.

This system involves three major aspects: the Swiss government, immigrants and the locals. This helps with the social balance, sense of belonging and social responsibility. We hope to establish a strong relationship between these three parties.

After two weeks study in this project, we start to realize rather than just reuse of there source, Frugal Design leads us to pay more attention on social problems and find a frugal way to solve it.

pet*

Frugal design isbased on the idea to extend the life of products. Everyone recycles

PET bottles, that’s why the future task will be to prolong the lifecycle of them. This project confronts the idea of upcycling PET bottles and bring them into a new context. You can create a float, a life jacket and other floating objects torelax at the lake or even use it in secure situations. Using a special constructed net you can plug in the bottles you’ve collected by yourself orfrom our pet* stations situated in public spaces. Let’s start a sustainable adventure!

A Second Story

The event‚ asecond story, brings together shops and individuals to sell second-hand clothes. It celebrates the value of used clothing by providing a glimpse intothe life they had before. Each shop curates their collection according to atheme, making it easier for people to find a connection.

SOUNDSCAPE

SOUNDSCAPE is anonline opensource platform to discover, create & share the experience of aplace through sound.

Our journeystarted with trying to understand the relationship between the city, its soundsand its people. We decided to create a framework for participatory developmentof a virtual soundscape / sound-map of the city. This would not only allow theusers to capture or explore the sounds of a place, but also make music using these sound bits.

Trashno more!

Festivals can bereal fun. But they share a common feature: they leave a pretty big mess once they are over. Our project aims to manage the amount of garbage left afterthese festivals. By observing festival visitor’s journey, categorizing the possible types of trash, we came up with solutions for the two most common problems: low capacity of garbage bins and under motivated people in . Instead of relying on the great job of Swiss event managers and town principles incleaning up the city overnight, we want to encourage people to take care of thefestival space in a fun way.

Happy Together

This is an approach addressing the concern of social engagement of elderly with the younger generation as inter generational playmates and learning partners as the life experience of the elderly can really enrich the learning of the younger generation. The concept involves a voluntary participation of the mothers or fathers as caretakers to those who are willing to start working again but cannot afford their children to the kinder garten. We develop ing a frugal solution for an interactive play environment with a mutual beneficial activity between the generations in an economic way.
